Book Review: Shiver

I know it seems like it took me a long time to read this but in actuality I read it in two days. Time got away from me and I could never give it the time it deserved until after graduation. But once I started I had a hard time putting it down with out running back to see what happened next. The book is about a realist girl named Grace and Sam (Possibly the personification of a hundred love poems) the sweetheart. There are many things keeping Grace and Sam from being "the couple" that most people take for granted. Through the whole book they are constantly fighting to keep what they have from being blown away by the bone chilling wind of fate.

Points I liked:
It switches back and forth from Grace and Sam's point of view
The characters personalities are NOT cookie cutter
The love between the two is beautifully captured

Points I didn't like: Truthfully I had a hard time finding a specific "thing" I didn't like but I guess if I JUST ABSOLUTELY HAD TO pick out a point because these points aren't things that would cause me to lay awake at night aggravated or toss the book out the window hitting a small child.

Someone died and they really didn't even get a paragraph it was more like "Well we all hated him anyways, he's dead, let's move on to the good stuff." Which again I didn't have a problem with because I too didn't like the character. But The whole thing just seemed to lack emotion.

There was one friend that only pops up a hand full of times just to chime in. It really seemed like there was no point to her at all. But there is a second installation called Linger and maybe she'll be in that one a bit more, or continue to be the pop up friend.

I give Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater a 4.5 out of 5

P.s. Just found out that they are going to turn Shiver into a movie! *I am excited*

  1. I loved Shiver, I just finished it last week :)
I agree with some points but really it beats out a ton of other romance books. I am so excited for Linger though. Of course the movie too!

  2. I haven't read a good book in months so I might try and find this next time I go into town.

  3. Em: Oh definitely I thought the love Sam and Grace shared was infinity truer than most of the other mushy love novels out there.

Kat: I would recommend it, but it is a fantasy love story but the fantasy part is so deluded it doesn't read like a fairy tale.
